New Video to be Displayed Alongside the Bedale Hoard

11 February 2015

A group of young people aged from 14-16 have unveiled their animated video on the story of the Bedale Hoard at the Yorkshire Museum.

The video was created and developed working with York Museums Trust as part of Genesis- an ongoing project working with 16 to 24 year olds to encourage more young people to learn about their cultural heritage and gain new practical skills.

Emma Williams, assistant curator of science and archeology (learning), said:

“Genesis is a great way to encourage more young people into the world of museums and give them the opportunity to learn new skills in areas that they are genuinely interested in and could benefit them in the future.

“We are really looking forward to the unveiling of the video that they have created and think it will add an interesting dynamic to the display of the Bedale Hoard.”

The project was designed to help participants learn and develop skills in all aspects of creating an animation. Working with animation company, Biomation, the group were able to learn about scriptwriting, short listing ideas, character design, set-design and set-building, voiceovers and practical animation.

The finished animation is on display in the museum’s medieval exhibition.

The Bedale Hoard

The Bedale Hoard was found by metal detectorists in 2012 and bought by the Yorkshire Museum in May 2014 after generous donations from the public and grants from funders.

It was discovered in a part of Yorkshire which very little is known about in the Viking period, so the very fact it exists sheds new light on the region one thousand years ago.

It has spent the last few months being conserved by the York Archaeological Trust (YAT), with fascinating and intricate details of the metalwork being uncovered for the first time.

The Hoard is now on back on display in the Medieval Gallery at the Yorkshire Museum.
